Welcome

welcome

The SKN Moves Initiative was designed under the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Programme in the St. Kitts & Nevis Ministry of Health. The aim of this initiative is to create a healthy lifestyle culture centered on healthy eating practices, regular physical activity and regular health checks/screenings.

The overall goal of this programme is to empower the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to be more physically active in their daily lives and to make healthier eating choices, by taking advantage of increased availability of accessible, safe and enabling physical environments and of improved food security that makes the healthy choice the easy and affordable choice.

Healthy Eating

HEALTHY EATING

Healthy eating is a pattern of eating that contributes to best possible health through positive relationships with food and diverse, balanced food choices that meet a person’s needs for nutrients and energy.

Healthy eating promotes and supports social, physical, and mental wellbeing for all people at all ages and stages of life and contributes to the overall health of individuals, families, and communities. Healthy eating helps minimize the risk and occurrence and supports the management of disease.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Physical activity any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure.

Exercise is a subcategory of physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful.

Physical activity includes exercise as well as other activities which involve bodily movement and are done as part of playing, working, active transportation, house chores and recreational activities.

HEALTH SCREENING

A health screening is a test done to find a condition before symptoms begin. Screening tests help find diseases and conditions early, when they are easier to treat. Routine health screenings are recommended for people throughout life as an important part of preventive care.

Talk to your doctor about what screenings you need and when you should have them. Different screenings may be recommended depending on your age, sex, family history, and if you have risk factors for certain diseases.

What Are NCDs?

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, are not passed from person to person.

They tend to be of long duration and are the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and behavioural factors.

The main types of NCD are cardiovascular diseases (such as heart attacks and stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma) and diabetes.
